Wisconsin Upsets No. 13 Michigan 37-21

MADISON, Wis. - Senior quarterback Tyler Donovan threw for one touchdown and scrambled for another as Wisconsin held off a fourth-quarter rally to upset No. 13 Michigan 37-21 on Saturday.

The Badgers (8-3, 4-3 Big Ten) snapped the Wolverines' eight-game winning streak, robbing Michigan of momentum going into its annual matchup with Ohio State.

The loss doesn't eliminate Michigan (8-3, 6-1) from the Big Ten title race or a Rose Bowl appearance, but the Wolverines have to beat the Buckeyes next week , something they haven't done since 2003.

Michigan played without injured running back Mike Hart, and Ryan Mallett relieved ailing quarterback Chad Henne in the first quarter.

With Michigan trailing 23-7 and stuck in its own end zone at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Ryan Mallett completed a 97-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mario Manningham that cut Wisconsin's lead to 23-14.

Ryan Mallett threw an interception on Michigan's next possession, but came back to throw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Adrian Arrington to cut the lead to 23-21 with 7:31 left in the game. Ryan Mallett kept the drive going with a desperation play, avoiding a sack by tossing the ball backward to Carson Butler, who ran 16 yards for a first down.

A Wisconsin drive stalled after Donovan left the game with a hand injury, but cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu came up with Wisconsin's third interception to set up a 6-yard touchdown run by Zach Brown that put Wisconsin ahead 30-21 with 3:11 remaining.

Brown scored again less than a minute later, after Ryan Mallett threw incomplete on fourth-and-19 from his own end zone to give the ball back to the Badgers near the goal line.

Donovan was 14-of-27 for 245 yards and a touchdown and ran for 49 yards and another score. He consistently scrambled out of trouble against an aggressive Michigan pass rush as Wisconsin built a 20-7 halftime lead despite playing without running back P.J. Hill, who sat out Wisconsin's loss at Ohio State a week ago because of a leg injury.

P.J. Hill didn't take the field until the third quarter after an injury to backup running back Lance Smith, and didn't appear anywhere near full strength. But it didn't matter after Donovan provided all the offense the Badgers needed in the first half.

Henne threw for 28 yards on Michigan's first two possessions, passing John Navarre to become the school's career leader in yards passing.

But Henne threw an interception to end the Wolverines' second possession and Donovan drove the Badgers 55 yards to take a 7-0 lead on a 10-yard pass to tight end Travis Beckum. The drive was helped by two separate personal foul penalties on Michigan linebacker Shawn Crable , the first of which wiped out an interception.

Ryan Mallett took over for Henne on the Wolverines' third possession. It was not immediately clear whether Michigan coach Lloyd Carr removed Henne for his performance or because of a nagging shoulder injury.

But Ryan Mallett couldn't move the ball, either, and Wisconsin drove for a field goal to begin the second quarter. Later, Donovan scrambled right and dove for a 2-yard touchdown to give Wisconsin a 17-0 lead with 7:46 left in the half.

On the Wolverines' next possession, Ryan Mallett found Manningham for a 12-yard touchdown to cut the Wisconsin lead to 17-7. Donovan drove the Badgers to a field goal just before halftime.

Michigan's second-half rally could have started much earlier, but the Wolverines squandered a scoring chance early in the third quarter. Wisconsin muffed a punt and Michigan recovered, but the Wolverines were turned away by the Badgers' defense.
