Redshirt Frosh
Wisconsin’s 2008 football team already has solid returning running backs in P.J. Hill and Lawrence Smith.
But this duo will be augmented this fall with Racine Park grad John Clay, a redshirt freshman, who was a prep sensation before enrolling on the Madison campus.
After his high school graduation, national high school sports analyst Tom Lemming rated Clay the No. 1 senior fullback prospect in the nation.
Last season, a decision was made to redshirt Clay because he had struggled to pass his academic entrance tests.
But John was a star in this spring’s pre-season Badger ultra-squad game. He had more carries than any other running back and had a solid near 5.0 yard per carry effort in amassing 96 yards.
At 225 pounds, Clay possesses excellent speed and reportedly has very quick feet.
If he continues to live up to expectations, Wisconsin could have one of the most talented running back trios in the Big 10, with Hill and Smith also counted on as highly productive backs.
Oh yes, both Hill and Smith are only juniors, so they have two more years of eligibility remaining at Madison.
